This is the whole idea in its plainest form. One photo goes in; a distance-per-pixel map comes out. Warmer / brighter is nearer, darker is further. That is the raw signal everything else on this model is built from.
There is no "right" colour — the map is only a way to read the numbers. Grayscale is the honest raw output; turbo and viridis just make the near/far bands easier to see.
